ALN201 Ayurvedic lifestyle and nutrition

Who should attend?

Anyone who is interested in learning the fundamentals of Ayurveda and the application of those fundamentals in order to live a happy and healthy life. A major emphasis is placed on nutrition and life style modification. The course is also highly recommended to those who are planning to learn Ayurveda and become a qualified practitioner. Some credit may be claimed against a similar unit offered by AIHFE in the Advanced Diploma of Ayurveda course.

Course Overview

Learners will be exposed to the Ayurveda principles of nutrition and dietetics. Different types of agni (fire) , physiology of digestion based on Ayurveda principles, twenty qualities of food and herbs, diet according to individual make up , benefits of some Ayurvedic herbs and spices, recommended food according to the season, recommended Ayurveda life style and Nutrition for certain conditions.

Program Content and Outcomes

This unit covers the following major principles of Ayurveda:

  • Agni (Fire) and its 40 types
  • Prapaka and Vipaka digestive processes
  • Basic principles of dietetics
  • Shadrasas (6 primary tastes)
  • Diets according to the doshas
  • Sattva, Rajas and Tamasic foods
  • Viruddha ahara (Incompatible foods)
  • Guna (Qualities of food)
  • Virya (Potency of food)
  • Vipaka (End taste of digestion)
  • Prabhava (Unique effect of food) concepts / theories
  • Basic dietary principles in relation to daily regimen (Dinacharya)
  • Seasonal regimen (Rtucharya)
  • Ayurvedic food classifications, categories and composition of foods
  • Introduction to some herbal combinations for use in daily life
  • Applying the various principles and establishing a personal health strategy
  • Various features of herbs and spices used in Ayurvedic lifestyle consultation
  • Establishing prakruthi, vikruthi, health and lifestyle information and basic nutritional advice

Meet the facilitator

Roopa Rao
Roopa is an Ayurveda practitioner graduated from Mangalore university in India and has been practicing in India, Singapore and in Australia since. She has over 20 years of experience as an Ayurveda practitioner and over 15 years’ experience as a lecturer/teacher in Ayurveda. Roopa’s infectious passion for Ayurveda has inspired many students both in Australia and overseas. She has been instrumental in the development, coordination and delivery of Ayurveda units in Advanced Diploma of Ayurveda qualification at the AIHM/AIHFE.

Program Schedule

This unit is delivered online so that learners can complete the course from anywhere and at any time that suits them best provided they have a computer and internet access. Learners are provided with 50 hours of recorded lectures and tutorials delivered over a 10 week period in a virtual classroom environment. Each lecture is supplemented with some additional reading material and Power Point slides.
